Grant Community Health Center is encouraging residents to be aware of Cyclospora, a microscopic parasite that can cause an intestinal illness known as cyclosporiasis.
According to information shared by the health center, people typically become infected by consuming contaminated fresh produce or water. Foods associated with exposure can include leafy greens, fresh herbs, berries and other fresh fruits and vegetables.
Symptoms of cyclosporiasis may include persistent watery diarrhea, loss of appetite, stomach cramps, bloating, nausea, fatigue and weight loss.
Grant Community Health Center said several precautions can help reduce the risk of infection. Residents are encouraged to wash their hands before eating or preparing food and rinse fresh fruits and vegetables thoroughly under running water. Travelers should also use safe drinking water.
Those experiencing persistent diarrhea, particularly after consuming fresh produce, are encouraged to contact a healthcare provider to discuss their symptoms and determine appropriate care.
The health center shared the information as part of its efforts to educate the community about foodborne illnesses and steps residents can take to protect their health.
