Acadian Ambulance crew members reunite with patient

Acadian Ambulance Avoyelles Parish Paramedics Alexis Pearson and Kyle Bergeaux and EMTs Aaron Nelson and Tommy Simon recently reunited with a patient they successfully resuscitated.

As the New Year began and January 1 turned into the early hours of January 2, one family faced the unthinkable. Alex and Sheronda were visiting Marksville, LA, to welcome the New Year when Alex experienced shortness of breath that turned into cardiac arrest.

Through rapid assessment, decisive action, and strong teamwork, Pearson, Bergeaux, Nelson, and Simon provided advanced lifesaving care and transported the patient to Rapides Regional Medical Center, where his recovery continued.

Just one week later, as Alex prepared to be discharged and return home, the crew members were given a rare and meaningful opportunity to reunite with Alex and Sheronda.

The couple were overcome with emotion and gratitude at the opportunity to visit with the Acadian Ambulance team who had cared for Alex during his most critical moments.

For the crew, seeing a patient alert, recovering, and able to return home is the greatest reminder of why they do this job. “Y’all are the reason why we do this,” Pearson shared.

“We extend our sincere appreciation to Rapides Regional Medical Center and their entire care team for continuing the patient’s care after arrival. Their skill, dedication, and teamwork played a vital role in the patient’s recovery and made this reunion possible,” said Acadian Ambulance Quality Improvement Coordinator Tyler Farris.

Moments like this highlight the collaboration between prehospital providers and hospital teams, and the dedication and compassion brought to every patient, even during holidays and overnight hours.

As we begin a new year, this story reminds us all of the heart of emergency care: showing up during life’s most difficult moments, helping create new beginnings, and giving families second chances.
