On a night that blended community pride with basketball heritage, Montgomery High School (MHS) in Grant Parish celebrated one of its most distinguished alumni during the alumni game. The spotlight shone on Stephanie Washington, whose remarkable basketball journey from MHS to college stardom at Northwestern State University (NSU) inspired current students, former classmates, and fans.
Stephanie Washington’s athletic roots trace back to Montgomery High, where she first made her mark before transferring her talents to NSU. Her collegiate career (1979–1983) with the Lady Demons remains one of the school’s finest. Over 101 games, she scored 1,222 points — placing her among the top scorers in program history.
Washington stood out not just for consistency, but for explosive scoring nights: in 1982 she logged 40 points against Southern, followed by 34 points against ULM and 33 against McNeese. As a senior in 1983, she dropped 30 points in a game vs. LSU.
Her career shooting efficiency — 48.8% from the field — remains among the top in Lady Demon history.
Those achievements earned her lasting recognition: Washington is listed among NSU’s all-time women’s basketball greats and saw her named on the school’s “N-Club Hall of Fame” ballot.
The alumni game wasn’t just about hoops. It was a celebration of community legacy — a chance for past and present to connect through a shared love of the game. As MHS called Washington to the floor, applause and cheers filled the gym. Former teammates, current players, and longtime supporters stood in tribute to someone who put Montgomery on the map in women’s basketball.
School administrators, coaches, and fans used the moment to reflect on what Washington represents: hard work, hometown pride, and the power of local talent rising to prominence on bigger stages. For many young athletes in the stands, she’s now a living example that big dreams can begin right at home.
Recognition at the Grassroots Level: For a small community like Grant Parish, Washington’s success — and her return home — shows that local schools can produce top-tier talent.
Inspiration for Student Athletes: Young girls and boys at MHS and nearby schools saw first-hand that hearts of champions can belong to your neighborhood.
Alumni nights like this help unite generations — former students reconnect, underclassmen see what’s possible, and the community rallies around shared history.
Montgomery High School hopes to make the recognition of outstanding alumni like Stephanie Washington an ongoing tradition. As sports and community events continue, the school aims to highlight former athletes whose journeys reflect the spirit of perseverance, excellence, and hometown pride.
For now — Saturday morning hallways will echo a little louder, gym walls might feel a bit taller, and every young athlete walking onto MHS courts will know: greatness sometimes begins at home.
Congratulations to Stephanie Washington — and thank you for reminding Grant Parish what homegrown talent looks like.
